Well, gents and ladies it's time to take a look at a very fresh new mmorpg on the market: "Skyforge"
Most of you heard talk about all the different new features it presents, like how you can become god, how every class is available and how well the combat is. After playing it for a while I ready to give a little insight on the game. I will make sure to point out the positive things and try to presuppose the things you are looking for. Let's begin
Let's begin by saying that this mmorpg is f2p and that alone is a good start for a big community of players. The game is very new, it currently is on 0.65 beta, so it is still very much at work. I'd say it's a good investment to start playing it before it comes out as 1.0
The biggest things you will notice at the start
No class selection
That is one of the most shocking new features of the game as it really breaks the typical mmorpg experience by not limiting you to classes. As you develop your character you are always free to choose your playstyle. You begin as warrior, mage and supporter and work yourself up to a monk, necromancer and other great classes.
The game looks good
It just really does. Even at middle settings the game captivates with beautiful combat animations, scenery, locations, quite a large fov (view distance). The animations and models seem to be up to the modern standards.
Nice flowing combat
1. Let me get this out: The actionbar does not confuse you at all in this game. That is something nice to see
By upgrading your characters skill tree you gain new combat abilities which you get to use in battle. The good thing: you get quite powerful skills in the start of the game. That means- no dicking around with lesser skills until you are level 30. Oh btw...there are no levels in this game.
A lot of innovation
Just like the last point of the previous list this game has a lot of new concepts of modern mmorpgs. The game progresses by you spending "particles of mastery"and other currencies upgrading
If you are going ???, let me make it clearer
You don't actively upgrade your armor or weapons in this game. The biggest boosts to your health, attack and other statuses goes through your passive skills and boosters (for equipment). These never get obsolete, so you focus on things that never get obsolete. Better weapons you just pick up as you go by and it's never the main target of your gameplay.
The negative aspects
If you are looking for a direct alternative to World of Warcraft, Tera, Rift, LOTR online or the other big mmorpgs that are out there...then you might get a little bit dissapointed.
Skyforge plays by a lot of new different rules. It said goodbye to concepts like an open world, armors (you get to change costumes instead). There are no mounts, no castles, no things like leveling, raid bosses (at least for now, this still might change), no collectibles or even crafting.
I personally was a little bit dissapointed to not find these many things that I loved. No housing or even titles gives me personally an empty feeling. And yet this game manages to discard or reintroduce concepts that have became stale for many players.
To sum up: If you are a player who:
wants to see more innovation in your games
if your priority is:
combat
nice models, textures and locations
if you don't mind
not playing an open world
not being able to craft
not being able to build houses
looking past the oldest rpg mechanics
than it's safe to say you can give Skyforge a try.
If however
You have a completely different opinion on the things mentioned above and want a game that resembles classics like WoW, then Skyforge might not entertain you for a long while because you will feel it's empty.
P.S
One thing I cannot give an honest opinion of is the guild system. Though there are guilds in Skyforge, they seem to be limited and only amongs certain groups of people. I did not manage to find one to enter. As far as I can tell guilds are not as interactive as the guild in WoW and other mmorpgs.
Also:
I saw no real signs of pvp or pve yet. That comes later in-game. I am not sure how that compares to the other games.
No matter if you choose to install Skyforge or not, I hope this personal review was informative. Stay tuned for a Guild Wars 2- WoW-Rift comparison coming someday soon.
