Prevent modded Fallout and Elder Scrolls games from crashing + manage mod list
Playing Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New vegas can really be fun at times, but after a while players want to fix their game up with mods to add more content or to fix the given.
http://www.nexusmods.com
is perfect for finding your perfect set of mods.
So you install one mod...Then another...then another
BANG! Your game doesn't work anymore!
Your game might even crash before you start it. But don't worry, it's easy to fix everything with these 3 free softwares that are listed here:
These programs work just as well with any above mentioned games. The displayed screenshots are from my fallout game system.
BOSS (the tool to automatically check incompatibilities)
http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/
http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/
Search for BOSS in the search bar
With this tool you will figure out a bit about the load order (A really important element when installing mods, do not ignore it) of your mods and check if there are any possible incompatibilities amongst your mods.
___ Mod manager (links above use your game portal)
Check mod requirements, allows certain (or all) mods to be installed automatically.
Is very useful when installing large mods and also helps to keep a good oversight of your installed mods.
By using this 2 tools you should not face instant game crashes anymore.
TES5Edit/FNVEdit/TES4Edit/FO3Edit
This last good tool allows you to see the certain changes your mod partakes.
Why is this important?
By checking the certain values you will make sure that mods override each other correctly. Is it not as critical as the last 2 tools, but this really helps you to keep your mods in check. See the picture for an instance.
Notice how particular mod values are marked red. That means the given value is overridden and it won't show up in the game as I would want.
This is an advanced tool, but it's the ultimate tool to manage your mod list.
Take your time to learn it!
ALSO: Don't worry if there is a lot of red. It is normal for mods to override each other. Just TRY to keep it as low as possible
The mods are set correctly, and yet crashes still occur?
Then you are might still be facing memory problems.
A list of options at hand:
lower the game resolution when using a weaker pc
game performance optimizers (mods)
upgrade your hardware
keep away from demanding mods
After doing all these steps your chosen game will not crash and most likely work faster and more stable.
